The Foundation Programme and Beyond
The first step to becoming a specialist doctor in the United Kingdom is completing the Foundation Programme. After successfully completing the program, you will be awarded the FPCC, which opens doors for further training in your chosen medical specialty or for training in general practice (GP).
The duration of specialty training can vary significantly depending on the chosen field. General practice training usually lasts three years, while other specialties may require 5 to 8 years of training. The actual duration of the training may also be affected by the rate at which you achieve your competencies, whether you take time for out-of-program research (OOPR), or if you choose part-time training (LTFT).

Understanding Training Programmes for Different Specialties
The United Kingdom offers two main types of training programs for different medical specialties:
Run-through training
Run-through Training: Some specialties offer run-through training programs, which allow candidates to apply once, at the beginning of the program, and secure a position for the entire duration of their specialty training. This streamlined approach provides a clear pathway, reducing the need for competitive entry at later stages.
Uncoupled training
Other medical specialties consist of basic training, followed by competitive entry into advanced specialty training. The duration of basic training can vary, usually lasting between two to three years. After completing the basic training, candidates must compete for a position in advanced specialty training, the duration of which may vary depending on the specialty.
